Motorcyclist dies in crash on Florida's Turnpike in Broward County

Alexander Mendez, 30, thrown from motorcycle, run over

A man riding a motorcycle similar to the one in this Honda photo was killed on Friday.

BROWARD COUNTY, Fla. – A 30-year-old Pembroke Pines man was killed Friday while riding a 2004 Honda 1000 motorcycle on Florida's Turnpike in Broward County, according to the Florida Highway Patrol. 

Alexander Mendez was traveling at a high rate of speed when he lost control near mile marker 44.5, struck the metal guardrail and was thrown from the motorcycle, Lt. Alvaro Feola said.

After his body struck the left rear tire of a vehicle, Mendez, who was wearing a helmet, died at the scene. 

Troopers identified the driver of the vehicle that struck him as Manuel Herrera-Fernandez, 53, who remained at the scene. 

The FHP is still investigating the cause of the crash.
