BMW Motorrad India launched its first sub-500cc and most affordable twin bikes, the G 310 R and the G 310 GS on July 18. The G 310 R is a true-blue roadster while the G 310 GS is an adventure bike for those who want to explore unbeaten paths.
BMW Motorrad revealed the G 310 R in January 2016 and the adventure version G 310 GS in November same year. Both the bikes have been developed in Munich, Germany by BMW Motorrad while the bikes are produced at Hosur in India by cooperation partner TVS Motor Company.
Since its reveal, BMW G 310 R and G 310 GS are two of the most awaited motorcycles in India. Though BMW Motorrad India started operation last year, it took its own sweet time before bringing the most important bikes. Why such a hype around the new G 310 twins? We have all the information.
BMW G 310 R- premium roadster
The G 310 R embodies the pure essence of a BMW roadster. The motorcycle has clearly taken inspiration from the bigger capacity BMW S 1000 R, in terms of design. The striking headlamp, muscular fuel tank, attractive trim elements and characteristic roadster proportions give the motorcycle a contemporary and mature look.
The motorcycle gets premium cycle parts like the upside down front forks and monoshock suspension at the rear. It employs a 300mm disc brake in the front and a 240mm at the rear along with ABS. It goes up against KTM 390 Duke and Mahindra Mojo.
BMW G 310 GS- adventure tourer
BMW G 310 GS borrows design cues from the premium R 1200 GS bike. Since it is an off-roader, the G 310 GS forks have a travel of 180mm, 49mm more than G 310 R, while at the rear the shock travel is also increased to 180mm, up from 40mm.
The G 310 GS gets a newly-designed fairing, the 'GS' moniker on the fuel tank, off-road friendly tires and a new engine cowl. It will square up against Royal Enfield Himalayan and Kawasaki Versys X-300.
BMW G 310 R and G 310 GS- engine and transmission
Both the bikes are powered by newly developed 313cc water-cooled single-cylinder with four valves and two overhead camshafts together with electronic fuel injection. The engine develops 33.5bhp at 9,500rpm and a maximum torque of 28Nm at 7,500rpm mated to a 6-speed gearbox.
The engine comes with a backwards-tilted cylinder in open-deck design, with the cylinder head turned 180 degrees. BMW Motorrad claims this will lower the centre of gravity and aids in agility.

Both the G 310 R and G 310 GS accelerate from 0 to 50kmph in just 2.5 seconds and achieve a top speed of 143kmph.

The G 310 R is available in Style HP, Cosmic Black and Racing Red colour options while the G 310 GS comes in Pearl White Metallic, Cosmic Black and Racing Red options.

BMW Motorrad has priced the G 310 R at Rs 2.99 lakh while its adventure sibling G 310 GS costs Rs 3.49 lakh (ex-showroom, pan-India).
