A 30-year-old Detroit man was killed after he was ejected from his motorcycle when it hit a retaining wall on westbound Interstate 96 near Evergreen Road in Detroit, according to Michigan State Police.

The motorcyclist's body was found in the roadway of eastbound I-96 by a trooper responding to numerous calls of a motorcycle down on the shoulder of the westbound lanes without a rider around 9:25 p.m. Friday, June 6, according to a statement by Michigan State Police Second District on X. The man was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.

A preliminary investigation showed the motorcyclist was "traveling at a high rate of speed," lost control and was ejected from the motorcycle after hitting the concrete retaining wall dividing the westbound and eastbound lanes, state police said.

There were no other injuries of vehicles involved in the crash, police said.

"As we begin motorcycle season, this crash serves as a reminder that motorcycle operators need to follow all traffic laws," Lt. Mike Shaw said in the X statement. "If you operate a motorcycle, be sure to wear protective gear, have an endorsement, and drive safely."

Michigan State Police did not immediately respond to requests to comment.
