OVERLAND PARK, Kan. — A 30-year-old Kansas man is in critical condition after he was knocked off his motorcycle in a hit-and-run crash with a car Wednesday morning.

The crash happened near West 95th and Foster streets in Overland Park. Police are investigating the hit-and-run crash, which caused serious injuries.

“Even at 5 miles per hour, you get knocked off the motorcycle, you hit your head, you are looking at some serious injury if you do not have a helmet,” said John Lacy of the Overland Park police department.  

Police say at about 7:15 a.m., the motorcyclist was headed north on Foster Street when a car pulling out from the McDonald’s parking lot broadsided the motorcycle in a T-bone crash.

Police say the car that hit the motorcycle left the scene of the crash. Through witness descriptions, police were able to track down the car and driver near West 103rd Street and Metcalf Avenue.

That driver, a woman, was taken into custody and is being questioned about the crash by detectives.

Overland Park police say the motorcyclist was not wearing a helmet and suffered critical injuries.

“I am a motorcyclist myself and I always wear my helmet,” Lacy said. “I understand that in Kansas you do not have to have a helmet, or in Missouri. But it’s always a good thing to have a helmet.”

A vehicle pulling out from a parking lot is unlikely to have been traveling very fast, but some witnesses report that the motorcycle may have been speeding.

Police say there is video of the crash captured by surveillance cameras nearby.

Police also say if the car driver had returned to the crash scene or called police, that woman probably would not be accused of fleeing the scene of a crash.
