GRISWOLD, Conn. (WTNH) — Hopeville Pond State Park in Griswold was closed Thursday afternoon for an investigation into the death of a driver in a single-vehicle crash.
Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection (DEEP) report the crash involved a motorcycle hitting a fixed object. State Police say the crash occurred at 929 Hopeville Rd at about 2:16 p.m.
DEEP, Environmental Conservation Police, and the Connecticut State Police’s Collison Analysis Reconstruction Services (CARS) unit responded to the scene and are investigating.
The driver was pronounced dead at the scene.
DEEP reported the victim’s identity Sunday as Frank M. Herrera, 81, of Exeter, Rhode Island. They say he was drive a street-legal motorcycle when he hit a fixed object within the park.
The cause and manner of death will be determined by the State Office of the Medical Examiner.
The park has since reopened to the public.
