The naked streetfighter segment in India has seen the entry of some new comers in the last few years. The 300cc plus territory, in particular, was originally started by KTM with its 390 Duke and for years, there had been no direct rival of the motorcycle making it sit at the throne without any problems. However, things may change soon as BMW Motorrad is all set to enter the segment in India with its highly awaited G310R roadster that is being seen as the prime competitor to the 390 Duke. The Austrian manufacturer has heavily updated the Duke in its 2017 avatar, easily making it one of the best motorcycles that you can buy in this segment. Despite the BMW G310R having lesser features, it still manages to give a good fight to KTM’s streetfighter. The only thing that remains to be seen is the pricing at which the Bavarian automaker will bring the bike to our shores. As BMW Motorrad is currently busy setting up dealership network in India, the launch of BMW G310R is still few months away.

The BMW G310R has a muscular styling and looks a proper roadster from almost every angle. The bike gets a triangular shaped headlamp upfront that looks neat and sober. The 11-litre fuel tank has sharp extensions that look sporty. The overall design is quite beefy and has some resemblance with its elder siblings. The 2017 KTM 390 Duke, on the other hand, looks futuristic and aggressive. The bike has full LEDs at the front and the 13.5-litre fuel tank has sharp tank extensions that lend it a fascinating look. The trellis frame of this motorcycle exposes itself in orange colour making for another interesting visual highlight. BMW G310R vs 2017 KTM 390 Duke: Engine Specifications

The G310R from BMW Motorrad gets its power from a 313cc, single cylinder, liquid-cooled engine that comes mated to a six-speed gearbox. The fuel injected mill sheds out 34 bhp of power along with 28 Nm of torque. On the other hand, the 2017 KTM 390 Duke draws its power from a bigger 373cc, single cylinder motor linked to a six-speed transmission that is further assisted to a slipper clutch. The liquid-cooled, fuel injected motor develops a maximum power output of 43 hp and 37 Nm respectively.

The BMW G310R has been fitted with a 300mm disc brake upfront along with a 240mm disc brake at the rear, coupled to BMW Motorrad Anti-Lock Braking System (ABS). The motorcycle sits on a tubular steel frame and its suspension system comprises of 41mm upside down forks upfront along with a monoshock at the rear. The G310R rolls on 110/70 front and 150/60 rear section tyres coupled to 17-inch alloy wheels. Talking of KTM, the 390 Duke has been equipped with 320mm disc brake at the front along with a 230mm disc brake at the rear. These have also been linked to an ABS for effective braking. The bike is bolted on a steel trellis frame and the suspension set up of the 2017 KTM 390 Duke comes with 43mm inverted forks at the front along with a monoshock for the rear. The motorcycle rides on 110/70 section tyre at the front along with 150/60 section unit at the rear, and fancy orange alloy wheels.

The upcoming BMW G310R gets a disc brake at both ends that come linked to an ABS. The bike gets a full digital instrument cluster that offers plenty of information to the rider. The bike receives pure roadster muscular styling that is totally new for this segment, especially in India. On the other hand, the 2017 KTM 390 Duke gets a fully coloured 5-inch TFT instrument cluster that supports smartphone connectivity as well. Dual disc brakes with ABS come as standard and the bike receives a slipper clutch as well for effortless downshifts. The motorcycle also gets full LED headlamp, tail lamp and turning winkers that not only look fascinating but also serve the purpose better.

The 2017 KTM 390 Duke is currently available at the company’s dealerships across India at a price of Rs 2.29 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi). On the other hand, the BMW G310R is expected to arrive at a price close to Rs 2.5 lakh. While the pricing of the two will likely be nearing each other, it is the KTM that presents a better value-for-money package, courtesy more features and a bigger engine. However, the BMW G310R can be picked over the KTM if one likes its roadster styling or is looking for a less aggressive motorcycle, both to look at and ride.
