LAHORE: Despite the fact that billions have been pumped into them, the Lahore police have failed to control crime, according to data available with The Express Tribune.
Besides IT-based initiatives like ops rooms and the Punjab Safe Authority, new forces like the Dolphin Squad and Police Response Unit have also been introduced to control crimes.
During the first nine months of 2017 (till September 30, 2017), over 8,886 cases of crime against property, such as dacoity, robbery, car-snatching, car-lifting, motorcycle-snatching, motorcycle -lifting, other vehicle snatching, other vehicle lifting and burglary have been registered with different police stations of Lahore. Data was gathered from registered FIRs. The actual figures of crime may be much higher as countless complaints of refusal to register FIRs were observed by citizens to show a better progress report.
In 8,886 cases of crime against property, 24 were of dacoity, 1,836 of robbery, 10 of car-snatching, 437 of car-lifting, 199 of motorcycle-lifting, 3,818 of motorcycle-lifting, five of other vehicle snatching, 281 of other vehicle lifting and 2,224 of burglary. Meanwhile, 52 cases were registered under 382 of the Pakistan Penal Code.
Lahore, Faisalabad top list of criminal offences against women
As usual, the Saddar Division topped the crime rate as 1,984 cases were registered there. The registered cases included one of dacoity, 339 of robbery, six of car-snatching, 111 of car-lifting, 64 of motorcycle-snatching, 791 of motorcycle -lifting, two of other vehicle snatching, 42 of other vehicle lifting, 617 of burglary and 11 were registered under section 382 of the PPC.
The Saddar division also has the most incidents of robbery, car-lifting and burglary compared to others.
The Cantonment Division followed Saddar Division with 1,811 registered cases. These included 11 of dacoity, 350 of robbery, 70 of car-lifting, 13 of motorcycle-snatching, 746 of motorcycle-lifting, 48 of other vehicle lifting and 557 of burglary, while 16 cases were registered under 382 of the PPC.
City Division remains was in third place as 1,713 cases were registered. The registered cases included 4 of dacoity, 355 of robbery, two of car-snatching, 81 of car-lifting, 68 of motorcycle-snatching, 838 of motorcycle-lifting, 78 of other vehicle lifting, 227 of burglary and nine cases were registered under section 382 of PPC.
Model Town had the fourth highest crime rate where 1,391 cases were registered. The cases included four of dacoity, 239 of robbery, two of car-snatching, 74 of car-lifting, 42 of motorcycle-snatching, 593 of motorcycle-lifting, two of other vehicle snatching, 54 of other vehicle lifting, 376 of burglary. At the same time, five cases were registered under section 382 of the PPC.
After Model Town, the highest numbers of cases of crime were reported in Iqbal Town where 1,087 were registered. The registered cases included four of dacoity, 293 of robbery, 49 of car-lifting, 12 of motorcycle-snatching, 480 of motorcycle-lifting, 28 of motorcycle-lifting, 216 if burglary and five of 382 of the PPC.
In Civil Lines Division, 900 cases were registered. The registered cases included 260 of robbery, 52 of car-lifting, 370 of motorcycle-lifting, 31 of other vehicle lifting, 181 of burglary and six cases were registered under section 382 of the PPC.
Lahore Police Spokesman claimed that the operations wing showed excellent results during the month of September 2017 and arrested 211 suspects from 89 gangs and 266 cases have also been traced against them. About Rs170 million were also seized from the gang’s members, while 102 proclaimed offenders and 837 court absconders were also arrested in the same period.
Lahore Police, KIPS collaborate for welfare of officials
During the month of September, 337 cases were registered against as many suspects for possessing illegal weapons. Police also recovered six Kalashnikovs, as many rifles, 15 guns, 313 revolvers and pistols, five daggers and 1,810 bullets.
During action against drug dealers, 444 cases were registered and 451 culprits were arrested and 1.5 kilogrammes of heroin, 243 kilogrammes of hashish, 16 kilogrammes of opium and 4,765 bottles of liquor were recovered. Moreover, 69 cases were registered against gamblers and 400 suspects were arrested.
Stake money worth Rs0.9 million was also seized. At the same time, during a special crackdown, 325 cases were registered against 711 culprits for violating the law.
