A 73-year-old Clermont man was killed Sunday morning when a car drifted into his lane and struck his 2015 Kawasaki motorcycle, the Florida Highway Patrol said.

Stephen Newton was traveling north on the rural County Road 455 near Heatherwood Lane in Lake County when the 2001 Chevy Malibu and struck him head-on, said FHP Sgt. Kim Montes.

Montes said that the driver of the Malibu, Jessika Sutphin, 26, of Montverde, consented to a blood-alcohol test, but the result will not be known for weeks.

“For an unknown reason, [the Malibu] failed to negotiate a curve in the roadway and veered into the northbound lane” and hit him, according to an investigator’s report.

“The crash remains under investigation and charges are pending,” the report said.
