When a motorcyclist saw the truck driving through the crowd of people gathered on the Promenade des Anglais in Nice to see the Bastille Day fireworks, he was attempted to catch up with the vehicle and stop the truck, but after an unsuccessful attempt to open the car door, he fell under the wheels and died, AFP reported citing eyewitnesses.

"I stood on the balcony… and watched people celebrating, when a truck suddenly appeared and to my surprise drove through the crowd, it drove very slowly… and was followed by a biker," the agency wrote quoting German journalist Richard Gutjahr.

"The motorcyclist was trying to catch up to the truck and open the driver's door, but fell and died under the wheels of the truck," the journalist said.

'Complaints Unanswered': Nice 'Has Long Suffered' From Lack of Police
At least 84 people were killed and over 100 injured after a truck plowed through a crowd celebrating Bastille Day in the French city of Nice late on Thursday. The tragedy has been classified as an act of terrorism.

According to eyewitnesses, the truck was zigzagging and driving over people for nearly two kilometers. The attacker also opened fire and was later killed by the police.

"The truck drove faster, zigzagging, straight to the crowd," Gutjahr said. According to him, the crowd then ran in panic in different directions and tried to find a hiding place in nearby hotels.

Deputy of the French National Assembly Eric Ciotti also told Europe 1 about the heroism of a female police officer who jumped onto the killer-truck in an attempt to stop it.

"That's when the police were able to neutralize the terrorist. I will not forget the sight of this female police officer who stopped the killer," he said.

According to identification documents found inside the truck, the driver was a 31-year-old male resident of Nice of Tunisian origin. At least 84 people, including children, were killed and dozens of others were injured.

President Francois Hollande and other French officials referred to it as a terrorist attack and declared three days of national mourning.
