MUNCIE, Ind. — A Muncie couple were severely injured Sunday in a traffic accident involving their motorcycle on U.S. 35 southeast of the city.

Kirk Mace — recently retired after more than three decades as a Muncie police officer — and his wife, Deb, were on their motorcycle traveling northbound on the federal highway when a four-door pickup truck, traveling east on Delaware County Road 300-S, reportedly pulled into their path.

The motorcycle struck the truck's rear door on its passenger side, according to Jeff Stanley, chief deputy of the Delaware County Sheriff's Department.

The accident was reported shortly after 4 p.m. Sunday.

Both of the Maces reportedly suffered life-threatening injuries and were taken by ambulance to IU Health Ball Memorial Hospital.

The truck driver was not injured, Stanley said.

The sheriff's accident reconstruction team was investigating the crash.
