Iowa Marine killed in motorcycle crash in California
A U.S. Marine from Iowa died this weekend in a motorcycle crash in California, the Central Iowa Division of the Naval Sea Cadet Corps said in a statement.
Cpl. Andrew West, 22, of Van Horne, was training at U.S. Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton, north of San Diego. He died in an off-site motorcycle crash Sunday. Further details surrounding his death were not available. West’s body will be flown to Iowa on Saturday afternoon, and people can pay their respects along a motorcade that will escort West from the Des Moines airport to Cedar Rapids.
“This tragedy is a moment to reflect on the great wonder of life and in particular of Andrew's,” Lt. Cmdr. Eric Goslinga said. “A heartbreaking event like this touches all members of our cadet and alumni community, and we encourage people to find the support needed. We encourage all who knew Cpl. West to reach out to one another at this difficult time and to continue to share condolences and show support for Cpl. West's family and friends.”
Earlier this month, Lance Cpl. Cody Haley, of Eldora, died at Camp Pendleton after a tree fell on him at the Southern California base.
